There’s a certain magic that surrounds encountering murals. What was once an idea in someone’s mind is now expressed as larger-than-life eye-catching street art. Here are some of the spectacular murals that all have a unique story to tell in Butler County, Ohio.
Alexander
Location: Armstead Park | Main and D Street, Hamilton
This bright and bold color blocked mural is based off the iconic 1806 John Trumball portrait of the city’s namesake, Alexander Hamilton. The mural was designed by local professional artist and art instructor, Nicole Trimble as part of the StreetSpark program.
Jammin'
Location: Governor's Square | Central Avenue & Broad Street, Middletown
This musical statement piece depicts bright and whimsical musical instruments and notes. Local artist, Sam Ashworth, designed this musical mural that doubles as the perfect backdrop for the concerts held on Governor’s Square.
The Obanoth Fox
Location: Peffer Park | Under the Millville Oxford Rd bridge, Oxford
Visit Peffer Park to see the vibrantly colored fox mural located under the Route 27 bridge. Mural artist, Hannah Webb, has a style recognized all over the country and was chosen to be the first city-funded mural artist back in her hometown of Oxford. The piece is 6.5’ tall and nearly 75’ wide, on the walking trail of Peffer Park.
Make Way for McCloskey
Location: Hamilton Municipal Building | 20 High Street, Hamilton
This mash-up mural pays homage to Hamilton writer and illustrator, Robert McCloskey, and his books Blueberries for Sal, Make Way for Ducklings, and Homer Price.
The Hive
Location: The Alleyway to Mac & Joe's | 21 E. High St, Hamilton
Stemming from Oxford’s history, Lorenzo L. Langstroth, “The Father of American Beekeeping,” invented the modern beehive and revolutionized the honey industry while living in Oxford. “The Oxford Hive” mural was created to bring the community together. With that goal in mind, artist Joe Prescher included the community to help paint honey inside the honeycombs.
Port Middletown
Location: TV Middletown Building | 1131 Central Avenue, Middletown
This mural stands to showcase life along the Miami-Erie Canal at Port Middletown. Next to the canal visitors can see a small-scale canal with locks.
What Lifts You
Location: Liberty Center | 7100 Foundry Row, Liberty Township
Kelsey Montague's massive works of interactive street art can be found all over the world. Her campaign, #WhatLiftsYou inspires people to express themselves, pursue what sets their hearts on fire, and find their purpose. Two of her murals can be found at Liberty Center. A gigantic pair of wings can be found within the Foundry.
