An Inside Look at the Historic Benninghofen House

Nestled in the heart of Hamilton's historic German Village, the Benninghofen House offers visitors a chance to experience history in a way that books and photographs simply can't. Operated by the Butler County Historical Society, this opulent home invites guests to explore the period furnishings, local artifacts, and stories that connect the county's history to the people who lived it.

Generations of Local History

Built in 1862, the Benninghofen House reflects generations of local history and is considered one of Hamilton's finest examples of Italianate architecture, from its arched windows and ornate woodwork.

The rooms are filled with Victorian-era furnishings, decorative arts, and family heirlooms, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of one of Hamilton's most prominent families during a time when the city was emerging as an industrial center.

The Butler County Historical Society

The museum experience extends far beyond the house. The Butler County Historical Society includes rotating exhibits, archives, and the Olive S. & Herbert T. Randall Research Center, home to an extensive collection of local history materials where researchers, genealogists, and history enthusiasts can access city directories, newspapers, maps, photographs, court records, family histories, school yearbooks, and more.

Currently on display through the end of the year is Charting Change: History of Butler County Ohio Through Maps where visitors can see how the land has changed over the years. From the first surveys to today’s digital technology, Butler County’s maps tell a story of land, people, transportation, industry, communities, and change.

The Historical Society also cares for thousands of artifacts and textiles representing Butler County's agricultural, industrial, military, and cultural history. These collections help tell the broader story of how local families, businesses, and institutions contributed to the county's growth over more than two centuries.
